8-Day Altai Mountains Trekking & Cultural Immersion Itinerary

🗓️ Day 1 — Arrive in Ulaanbaatar (Capital)

Activities

  • Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UB).
  • Transfer to hotel; meet your guide.
  • Explore key city sights (optional):
    • Gandan Monastery
    • Zaisan Hill panoramic viewpoint
  • Welcome dinner with traditional Mongolian cuisine.

✈️ Day 2 — Flight to Ölgii & Local Discovery

Morning

  • Fly to Ölgii in western Mongolia (about 3 hrs flight).

Afternoon

  • Visit local bazaar & small town culture.
  • Brief orientation with your trekking team.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Guesthouse or Ger Camp in Ölgii


🚙 Day 3 — Drive to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Route

  • Overland transfer to the entrance of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.

Stops

  • Halt at ancient Dear Stones (Turkic monuments) and petroglyph sites.
  • Camp setup in White River Valley (Akh Gol).

Experience

  • Prepare gear for trekking; meet support team (guides, cook, pack animals).

🥾 Day 4 — Trek to Potanin Glacier

Trekking

  • Ride or walk into alpine terrain on a horse / pack animal supported trek.
  • Hike scenic valleys toward Potanin Glacier (Mongolia’s longest glacier).

Highlights

  • Cross meadows, rivers, and womaned hillsides.
  • Camp near the glacier — short ice walks if conditions allow.

🗻 Day 5 — Malchin Peak Vista & Alpine Views

Trekking

  • Uphill hike to viewpoints around Malchin Peak (~4,000 m).

Panoramas

  • Spectacular vistas of the Altai ranges and neighboring borders.
  • Return to Potanin camp for dinner under stars.

🐪 Day 6 — Trek Back & Cultural Visit

Trekking

  • Retrace part of the route back toward the Khovd side of the park.

Cultural Highlight

  • Visit Tuvan nomadic families — experience daily life and handcrafted vodka, customs, and traditions.

Stay: Mountain valley camp


🌊 Day 7 — Drive back to Olgii & Eagle Hunters

Cultural Encounter

  • Drive back to Olgii town.
  • Meet a Kazakh eagle hunter family, witness traditional eagle handling and learn about golden eagle hunting customs.

Evening

  • Return to Ölgii for a comfortable evening, enjoy Kazakh folk music and dinner.

✈️ Day 8 — Return to Ulaanbaatar & Departure

Morning

  • Optional visit to Ölgii’s local museum or open market.

Flight

  • Return flight to Ulaanbaatar.

Afternoon

  • Free time in the capital — good chance for souvenir shopping, city stroll, or visiting a cultural show.

Departure

  • Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
